Setup & AR

How does setup work?

  1. Lay out terrain tiles and miniatures (or AR anchors only).
  2. Open the app and select Campaign or New Skirmish.
  3. Share the room code with other players.
  4. Scan the table surface, then locate the AR anchor(s).
  5. If using terrain tiles, walk the camera around the table to recognize them.
  6. Draft your army and place units — then play begins.

What are AR anchors?
AR anchors are half-sized tiles (with the UEDF emblem on one side and Scry'Ox on the other) that help the app orient to your play surface. You need at least one; a second can help players on the opposite side of the table. The anchors are included in the box.

Any tips for getting AR to work well?

  • Avoid rapid or jerky camera movements during setup.
  • Scan the entire table surface before finding the anchor.
  • Move slowly and steadily toward the anchor if it's not being recognized.
  • Minimize glare by adjusting your lighting or angle.
  • If tracking is lost during play, follow the on-screen prompts to re-scan.

The App

Is the app free?
Yes. The Rift Zone: Contact companion app is completely free to download and use. There are no subscriptions and no paywalls required to play the game.

Where do I download it?
The app is available on the iOS App Store and Google Play.

What devices does the app support?
At launch, the app requires:

  • An Android phone running Android 13.0 or later, or
  • An Apple iPhone running iOS 18 or later

For the best AR experience, a phone manufactured within the last few years is recommended.

Do I need a new account to use the app?
No. The app uses your existing Apple Game Center or Google Play Games account. If you don't have one, the app will walk you through setting one up.

Can friends play if they don't own the game?
Yes. The host sets up the game and shares a room code. Other players can join using just the app. Players in the same game share their unit inventories during the draft, so guests don't need to own the game to play. Rift Zone: Contact also supports
Pass and Play where only a single phone is required to play.

Can I play without terrain tiles or miniatures?
Yes! Rift Zone: Contact supports several play modes:

  • Full experience (recommended): Terrain tiles + miniatures + app AR overlay.
  • Travelling Light: Pack just an AR anchor and a few tiles; use the app to display virtual 3D unit models instead of physical miniatures.
  • Full AR: Use just one AR anchor and let the app render terrain and units entirely in AR — playable anywhere.
  • Remote play: A host can set up locally and share a room code so distant friends can see the full AR version of the same game on their own device as long as they have an AR anchor.

Does AR drain my battery?
AR is power-intensive. Make sure you have a full charge or access to a charger during play.

Future Content & Community

Will the game continue to receive updates?
Yes. Rift Zone: Contact is designed as a living game. Boosted Reality plans to add new scenarios, terrain effects, unit stories, faction morale mechanics, and more over time. The app can be updated without any changes to the physical game. Recently added features include an Observer mode and LAN multiplayer.

How can I provide feedback or influence the game's direction?
Early backers help shape the game's direction — from scenario priorities to balance tuning and AR feature development. Join the conversation on Discord or follow Boosted Reality on social media.
